You can also satisfy your curiosity and senses by visiting:

Oreshak - one of the most popular places for rural and eco tourism. The village of Oreshak is located on the slopes of the Troyan Balkan in Northern Bulgaria, 1 km from the town of Troyan, and lies on both sides of the Cherni Osam River. If you want to connect with the art of Bulgarian masters and feel the national spirit, the National Exhibition of Crafts and Arts is the place for you. Each year, national and international exhibitions are organised in the complex with the participation of Bulgarian and foreign masters. In the halls you will see items made of ceramics, wood, metal, fabrics, embroidery, jewellery, weapons, and more. The exhibition is also a bazaar and the items can be purchased immediately. The exhibition in the village of Oreshak is open to all throughout the year. One of the most attractive festivals in Oreshak and Troyan is the Plum and Plum Rakia Festival, held annually at the end of September, with many participants in contests for the best rakia, best connoisseur of plum rakia, culinary contests for dishes with plums. Another interesting tradition in the village is that when a child is born, a bottle of plum rakia is sealed especially for them. It is opened only when the child reaches adulthood. The picturesque cool forests and the mild climate of the Balkan make the village of Oreshak an attractive destination all year round. In the surroundings there are countless places for outings and walks, and herbalists can come across rare and highly medicinal specimens.

Baba Stana Village - or the Baba Stana neighborhood in the village of Oreshak, very close to the Troyan Monastery. The village Baba Stana gets its name from the legend of the widow Stana, who in the 16th-17th century, during Ottoman rule, sought refuge in the mountains above Oreshak. Together with her twelve children she settled in this hard-to-reach area, where she laid the beginnings of a new life. Over time the village grew and by the early 20th century its population reached 600 people. In 2010 the chapel “Saint Mary, Life-Giving Spring” was consecrated in the village; it has become a spiritual symbol for the community. Today this is an intimate place, where the Bulgarian Revival spirit has turned into magic for healing the soul.

Troyan Monastery - The Troyan Monastery “Dormition of the Holy Virgin” is not only the largest monastery in the Balkan Mountains, but the third largest spiritual center in Bulgaria (after the Bachkovo and Rila monasteries). Already by 1830 it was declared stavropegial – meaning directly under the Patriarchate, not a local bishop - a status it preserves to this day. The monastery complex is located on the picturesque bank of the Cherni Osam River near the village of Oreshak, 10 km from the town of Troyan. There is convenient hourly bus transport to the monastery. The monastery chronicle of the Troyan holy abode testifies that it was built around 1600. From its founding a small wooden church “Nativity of the Most Holy Virgin” was built. Around 1780 that church was reconstructed in stone, and under the abbot Paisius (1785–1817) it was expanded again. In 1835 a new church was erected in the monastery - the church “Dormition of the Most Holy Virgin”. The Troyan Monastery has been a center of Bulgarian education and literature. Here in 1765 the first monastic school was opened, and in 1869 it became secular, educating children from nearby villages. In 1871 Vasil Levski founded the first revolutionary monastic committee in the country in the monastery. The murals of the monastery church are the work of the famous Revival painter Zahari Zograf. With its architecture, woodcarvings, and artistic decoration (icons, frescoes) the monastery has influenced the development of crafts in the Troyan region – pottery, wood carving. The Troyan Monastery, besides its religious, educational and revolutionary role, is also known for its developed agriculture, livestock, and particularly fruit growing and especially plum culture. The monastic brothers produced plum rakia of admirable quality. In 1894 they participated with their own rakia in the Antwerp Exhibition (Belgium) and were awarded a bronze medal and diploma. At the outbreak of the April Uprising the monastery served as a command point for commanders Panayot Volov, Georgi Ikonomov and Toma Hitrov. To this day the original monastic cell where revolutionary affairs were discussed is preserved in its authentic form.

Troyan is a picturesque mountain town in Central Stara Planina. The White Osam River flows through it. During the Bulgarian Revival period, Troyan became a cradle of crafts whose traditions are preserved to this day.

Visit the Museum of Folk Arts & Applied Arts . The museum is housed in an old public building which was first a school, and later hosted the municipality. The building was built by master Gencho Kanev, a well-known craftsman from Tryavna. His works include many Bulgarian churches and public buildings, the most famous of which are the Varna Cathedral “Dormition of the Holy Virgin” and the building of the Aprilov High School in Gabrovo. The museum’s exhibits present the most characteristic crafts of the Troyan region - pottery, charcoal burning, small cask making, cooperage, woodcarving, blacksmithing, and more.

Turlata Forest Park is an attractive place for a walk in the outskirts with a magnificent panorama of Troyan. The forest park has been cleared and improved by the local forestry enterprise. In its lower parts there is a fun children’s corner with climbing frames and a zip line. A bit higher up there is a dendrarium with various kinds of fruit trees, each labelled. Benches for rest have been set by the children’s corner and near the trees.

Sopot Reservoir offers wonderful views and excellent opportunities for fishing and water sports. The landscaped part of its shores is near the village of Golyama Zhelyazna. The sports club “Osmos” for water sports has a base on the bank of the reservoir, near Paradise Bay.

Sostra Fortress is located near the village of Lometz, close to Troyan. It was a Roman castell built in the mid‑2nd century by order of Emperor Antoninus Pius and used until the end of the 5th century, when it was finally destroyed by the Huns. In front of the gate of the fortress Sostra you can see a very well‑preserved Roman road.

Skoka Waterfall , not far from Troyan, is beautiful with its waters and the lake beneath them. It is located near the Troyan village of Kaleitsa.

Gumoshtnik Village is scattered in several hamlets in the heart of the Troyan Balkan. Besides the nature and views, its greatest landmark is the Revival‑era church “St. Nicholas Summer” (1838). It impresses with its large size and its beautiful iconostasis, a masterpiece of Bulgarian woodcarving. Next to the church is the restored building of the local cell school from 1829. Also visit the Clay House, turned into a museum that preserves the history of the area, from which incredible panoramic views stretch far out toward the central parts of the Balkan Mountains.

Apriltsi is a small picturesque town nestled in the slopes of the Balkan Mountains and covers part of the borders of the Central Balkan National Park. Apriltsi can boast preserved and diverse nature – from wide meadows and dense forests to steep and high peaks. The town opens up a great panoramic view of the Balkan Mountains and the ridge of the Central Balkan National Park, giving the feeling that you are within arm’s reach of the summits.

The Cross Hiking Trail is an easy walking route that starts from the center of Apriltsi, past the sunken church “Saint Petka Paraskeva”. The length of the trail is 600 meters and it leads to a 34‑meter metal cross, which gives the trail its name. This is a route suitable for all age groups. Around the cross there are gazebos and benches, making the “Cross” area an ideal place for an outdoor lunch, picnic or simply relaxing in nature. The trail offers solitude and peace with panoramic views of the Balkan Mountains and the Apriltsi valley. For an even more breathtaking view, one can climb the stairs of the metal cross, from where you can observe the full beauty of the Balkan Mountains. You can also take wonderful photos there. The “Cross” area is charming even after sunset. The tall 34‑meter cross shines at night, and the little houses that are visible in the valley sparkle, creating an incomparable romantic feeling.

Novoselski Monastery , also called the Maiden Monastery “Holy Trinity” was built in 1830 by the local people in Apriltsi. The inhabitants of the valley were of a very awakened Christian spirit and already in the early years of Ottoman rule they built Christian temples as support for the life of the people. The monastery also plays an important role during the April Uprising. When the uprising was crushed, the monastery was destroyed, and the atrocities committed by the bashibozouks still echo from the monastery’s ground to this day. Every year on May 9 the church in the monastery, as well as all Orthodox churches, hold liturgies remembering those who died in the Novoselski Monastery.
