Banichan, a village in Pirin, is a real keeper of centuries-old traditions. Weaving woolen socks is one of those traditions. “[Sock weaving] is a letter from our ancestors for us to read with our eyes and accept with our hearts in order to preserve the strength of our spirit, unfading family memory and uniqueness of the women of Banichan.” Notes Rumyana Jibova, secretary of the community center of the village. The popular Banichan onion and the delicious Ogledna banitsa, which is prepared with it, are also emblematic of the village. What does “ogledna” mean? This a pastry used during special rituals: when the boy's parents come to visit the girl's home, the future bride treats them to this pastry. With this lesson, the women of the village will teach you how to make a ogledna banitsa and weave woolen socks. The experience will be accompanied by a traditional lunch bites.
