Map of outdoor experiences in Bulgaria (with routes)

The is no formula on how to spend your time in the best way possible. You can choose to stay alone at home and still enjoy it. You can be on top of the Eiffel tower at sunset with your soulmate and still be miserable. Someone once wrote that it ‘depends on your inner self’.

However, we can both agree that if you are unhappy when being in Lulin, you will be at least a little bit less unhappy if you go to the Maldives. How about that?

It’s the same when it comes to the warmer months of the year – you are doing just fine indoors, but it’s a lot more fun when you go outside and have some memorable and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. And now that everyone is still on the road, we decided to come up with a whole map of outdoor experiences in Bulgaria so that you can easily choose one and add it to your to plans… or you can come up a brand-new plan with the routes listed below. 😉

West Bulgaria

Sofia

Our capital is often underrated and branded as a boring place to spend your spare time. But there are things to do here as well that will take your breath away… literally:

THE BEAUTY OF SOFIA FROM ABOVE - FLIGHT WITH A MOTOR GLIDER

OBSERVE THE WORLD FROM A VERTICAL POINT OF VIEW

A MOTIVATIONAL FLIGHT – AEROBATICS FOR THREE

You can read one of our older blog posts here to find some less extreme things to do in case you have a free weekend in Sofia.

Pernik + a route

FLIGHT WITH HANG GLIDER

… which you can combine with going to the only Museum of mining on the Balkan peninsula, and the latest tourism trend – the Pchelina dam.

After the Liberation of Bulgarial, there are approximately a thousand people living in Pernik. In 1926, there are already more than 12 000! This increase in population is based on the fact that coal deposits have been found in this region, and the capital is in high demand of them – which up to this moment they have been imported from abroad. In 1891, the first state mine, called ‘The old mines’, has opened in Pernik. It has now become a museum.

The Museum of mining in Pernik is one of a kind. It is completely safe and child-friendly. It is open every day from 9 am until 4 pm, and the tours are on every hour with a guide only.

Kovachevtsi

WILD WILD WEST! A PACKAGE OF INDIVIDUAL MUSTANG RIDING LESSONS FOR BEGINNERS IN AN AUTHENTIC RANCH

In this ranch, called El Paco, the horses are ancestors of the legendary mustangs.

Kresna + a route

RAFTING ADVENTURE ON STRUMA

After the wild emotions on the rapids of the river, it is worth visiting Melnik as well. The smallest town in Bulgaria with a population of approx. 400 people. The architecture is in Revival style, and the town is surrounded by the famous Melnik pyramids which reach its highest points about 100 m.

If you are, however, looking for a nice place to stay overnight and are a fan of wine tasting – Villa Sintika is your top choice.

For the sensation seekers canyoning and rappelling on the Vlahi falls is the perfect addition to the rafting.

Iskar dam

SAILING ON ISKAR DAM WITH A CATAMARAN

is a nice weekend getaway. The coolness of the dam and the beautiful nature in this area are more than perfect for a walk.

Lukovit + a route

You can fill your day with emotions with a bungee jump from Prohodna cave, to explore the area and reach the Rock Monastery St. Marina. The trail is quite steep but the view is worth the climb.

Samokov

The Samokov valley is located between several mountains - Rila, Plana, Vitosha, Verila and Ihtimanska Sredna gora - and thus, the trail  predispose to many adventures:

HORSE RIDING IN RILA FOR BEGINNERS

OFF-ROAD EXPERIENCE WITH A DEFENDER

Ihtiman

OBSERVE THE WORLD UPSIDE-DOWN: PARACHUTE JUMP AND VIDEO CAPTURE

Bunovo village + a route

ADRENALINE ADDICTED – BUNGEE after which we recommend you to stop through the little-known village of Chavdar. There is the Archaeological Park ‘Topolnitsa’, consisting of a museum collection and five Neolithic houses, well representing the life of the Neolithic people. By the way, you can spend the night in one of them, but do not expect modern amenities - there is not even glass because they were not discovered in this era. :)

Very close to this village is Koprivshtitsa, where the spirit of Renaissance Bulgaria is still alive.

Central Bulgaria

Velingrad + a route

No matter how surprising it sounds, the spa capital offers far more than a spa.

MOTO-DELTA GLIDER FLIGHT above the beautiful mountain views is a nice way to start your day which you can then continue with a walk to the Batak dam. There are a number of adventures to indulge in:

KNEEBOARD

SKIING ... IN THE WATER!

FLYBOARD

AQUA RODEO

Nearby is Snezhanka Cave – also known as the ‘Pearl of the Rhodopes’ - as well as the village of Dorkovo with its Pliocene Park (famous for the huge predecessor of the elephant in the center of the exhibition) and the fortress Tsepina.

Klisura

BUNGEE JUMP from the highest place for bungee jumping in Bulgaria.

Gabrovo + a route

BUNGEE JUMP

Combine it with a visit to Etara - the only open-air ethnographic museum in Bulgaria, which represents the life of the Bulgarian Revival and take you to a completely different time.

Haskovo

OFF-ROAD ATV ADVENTURE FOR EXTREME NATURES

Kazanluk + a route

The views of the Rose Valley from above should not to be missed and you can enjoy them with:

A HANG GLIDER FLIGHT OVER KAZANLAK AND THE SURROUNDING AREA

INDIVIDUAL PRACTICAL COURSE IN PILOTING A PLANE

THE MAGIC OF THE VALLEY OF THE ROSES AND THE THRACIAN KINGS OF THE AIR

Near Kazanlak are Koprinka Dam and Golyama Kosmatka Mound - Tomb of Sevt III, and in the town itself there is a Rose Museum. Each of these places is worth a visit.

If you are ready for a longer walk, be sure to climb Mount Shipka.

Veliko Tarnovo + a route

Veliko Tarnovo is one of the most favourite cities to many of us. Now getting to it can be even more enjoyable with an off-road experience:

OFFROAD ADVENTURE WITH JEEP

ENDURO ADVENTURE

The Emen Canyon is very close - a picturesque place through which passes a panoramic eco-trail leading to the Emen Waterfall.

East Bulgaria

Sozopol + а route

The beautiful sea town offers you:

AN UNDERWATER ADVENTURE FOR TWO

MEET THE UNDERWATER WORLD

And although this is enough to enjoy, there are other magnificent views nearby as well - Cape Agalina and the Arkutino swamp. The cape is most famous for its fjord-like rock formations. In calmer waters, some adventurers even jump from the rocks, which are about 6 m high.

There is no canonized saint named Agalina, so it is believed that the name comes from an old pagan custom, according to which during big storms the women of the fishermen in the area threw a handful of soil from the cape into the sea to calm it down, with the words "Να γαληνη" (Be calm). After the adoption of Christianity as the official religion, it was named St. Agalina.

Sunny Beach + a route

JEEP SAFARI ADVENTURE

Yes, and after that it is not the right time for a bar or a disco (on the contrary of what you are probably guessing at when it comes to Sunny Beach activities), but for a walk to Cape Emine or sunbathing on Irakli. There are two things to know if you decide to visit Cape Emine:

Do not cause yourself the "convenience" of going directly by car there. Not because it is a black road (as it is), but because this way you will miss all the beautiful views on the road and you will park in front of the place with the most unsatisfactory panorama. Walking from the village of Emona to Emine is only a 30-minute easy walk and is totally worth it.

Do not choose the most commercial trial. Go through the chapel ‘St. Nikola’, and then along the edge of the cape (always take the paths on the left). The most beautiful views are there.

Sinemorets + a route

Definitely one of the most beautiful places on the Southern Black Sea coast. Make your visit even more memorable there with Kayaking on Veleka. The natural continuation of the trip with kayak is a walk on foot on the eco-trail ‘Birds’, which passes by the river, and after that, you will reach the most beautiful (in our opinion) beach in Bulgaria - Veleka. A pretty little place with wild vegetation, sand dunes, hippie beach bars with only a few wooden chairs in an area of 4 sq. m so that it does not interfere with the beauty of the coast, with great scenery of natural materials and a surf school, bird watches and so on. In general, we call this place… a paradise.

Another place you should not miss is an area called ‘The Ships’. These rocks near Sinemorets are extremely reminiscent of sinking ships. But in fact, the story does not end there - it is believed that ancient Sinemorets was full of pirates, and they have lit a fire on high cliffs there to imitate a lighthouse and lure merchant ships to shore. According to another legend, sailors and fishermen have smashed old and unusable boats and ships there.

Not so far from Nestinarka you can find boat trip, too.

Burgas

In Burgas you can expect a bungee jump, and in our previous blog post you can find even more ideas for a good time in the seaside town.

Shkorpilovtsi, Varna

Diving for couples is also available at the northern end of the Black Sea coast - in Shkorpilovtsi.

Shumen + a route

In Shumen you will find:

MOTO GLIDER FLIGHT

Of course, if you are in the area, the Madara Rider is a must-see!

Have you already chosen a destination?
